eCVT Transmission

  • Toyota hybrids use an eCVT (electronic continuously variable transmission), which is completely different from a standard CVT. The difference isn’t just minor—it’s like comparing an eBook to a paperback. Unlike belt-driven CVTs, eCVTs in hybrids rely on an electric motor and planetary gear system, making them much more durable.

  • Never use regular CVT fluid—always stick to the manufacturer’s recommended transmission fluid. Hybrid transmissions have specific lubrication and cooling needs. Stick with Toyota WS (or equivalent) for Toyota and Lexus hybrids.

  • There is no stick to check the level, and It's not lifetime transmission fluid. Change it around 100,000 km, then do a drain-and-fill every 50,000 km afterward. Avoid flushing, especially on older vehicles, as it can dislodge debris and cause more harm than good.
